Most of what looks like moss on a Baton Rouge roof is actually algae or lichen. How to tell the three apart, why moss is the one that genuinely damages shingles, and the low-pressure method that removes it without stripping granules.
The short answer first, because it changes what you should do next: most of what people call moss on a Baton Rouge roof is not moss. The dark streaks running downhill from the ridge are algae. The flat, crusty gray-green patches stuck to the shingles are lichen. True moss - the soft, springy, cushiony growth that stands up off the surface - does grow here, but it is the least common of the three, and it shows up in specific places: deeply shaded north-facing slopes, the low edge of a roof under a heavy live-oak canopy, and the valleys where wet leaf litter sits for weeks at a time. All three come off the same basic way, with a cleaning solution and dwell time rather than force. But knowing which one you have tells you how urgent the job is, and moss is the one that is genuinely urgent.
Stand in the yard and look at the texture rather than the color. That one habit sorts it out in about ten seconds.
Moss needs three things: shade, sustained moisture, and a rough enough surface to settle on. Baton Rouge hands it all three. Across the Garden District, Southdowns, Capital Heights, and the older Highland Road blocks, mature oak canopy keeps entire roof slopes out of direct sun from morning through late afternoon. Our humidity means a roof wet at sunrise often is not dry by noon, and through the wet months it may not fully dry for days on end. And an older asphalt shingle, with its granule layer thinning and loosening, is a rougher and more porous surface than a new one, which makes it easier to colonize.
That is why the growth is almost never even across a roof. The north slope goes first. The section under the overhanging oak limb goes next. The south-facing slope on the very same house can stay comparatively clean for years, which is worth noticing before anyone quotes you for a whole-roof problem you may not have.
Algae is mostly cosmetic. Moss is not, and the difference is worth understanding because it decides whether this is a job for this season or a job for someday.
A moss cushion holds water against the shingle long after the rest of the roof has dried out. Shingles are built to shed water, not to sit wet under something. More to the point, moss creeps into and under the shingle edges, and as the mat thickens it lifts that edge - not much, but enough to break the seal strip, enough for wind to get a purchase on it, and enough for water to travel sideways underneath a course instead of running down over the top of it. In valleys and along the low edge of a slope, a moss mat also dams the runoff and traps leaf litter behind it, which keeps that whole area permanently damp.
A lifted edge plus standing water is the mechanism by which a cosmetic problem turns into a leak. That is the honest case for not letting moss ride until the next re-roof.
The approach that removes roof growth without costing you shingle life is a soft wash: a cleaning solution applied at roughly garden-hose pressure, given real time to dwell, then rinsed gently. The solution kills the organism outright. What is left dies, dries, loses its grip, and comes away over the following weeks as rain works on it.
Two honest expectations come with that. First, a roof does not go instantly spotless the way a driveway does under a surface cleaner - it looks dramatically better within days and keeps improving for a few weeks after. Anyone promising an immediately perfect roof is telling you, whether they mean to or not, that they intend to use pressure. Second, the dead growth needs to be left alone to release on its own; going back up to help it along undoes the point of the exercise. If the house is single story, the pitch is gentle, and the moss sits somewhere you can reach from a ladder, this is a reasonable weekend job. If any one of those is untrue, read the next section instead.
The honest answer is that they help modestly, and only going forward. Ridge strips work by shedding trace amounts of metal in rainwater, which discourages regrowth on the area directly downhill of the strip. Under a dense oak canopy, where rain reaches the roof unevenly and leaf litter keeps landing on it, that protection is patchier than the product photos suggest. And no strip removes what is already growing. Treat them as something you add after a cleaning to stretch the interval, never as a substitute for the cleaning itself.
The most effective long-term fix is sunlight. Thinning the limbs that overhang a shaded slope lets the roof dry faster after rain and cuts down the leaf litter that feeds the growth in the first place. With live oaks that is a real trade-off, and not one we would push anyone into - the shade is worth a great deal in a Baton Rouge summer, and a mature oak is worth more to the property than any number of roof cleanings. Thinning to let dappled light through, rather than taking limbs off, is usually enough to change how quickly a slope dries.
A heavily shaded, oak-canopied roof in this climate generally wants attention every year or two. A roof that gets real sun for most of the day can go considerably longer between cleanings. The calendar is the wrong thing to watch anyway - watch the north slope. When the streaking on it starts reading as distinct patches rather than an even shading, and especially when anything on it looks raised rather than flat, the growth has moved from cosmetic to structural and it is time.
Hand this one off if the house is two stories, if the pitch is steep enough that you would be relying on your footing, if the moss is sitting in the valleys or up under flashing, if the roof is near the end of its service life, or if there is no practical way to control where the runoff goes. Roof work is the place on a house where the savings from doing it yourself are smallest and the downside is largest, and that arithmetic does not change no matter how good the day looks.

Moss or algae on a roof slope almost always means the same organisms have taken hold elsewhere on that side of the house - the north wall, the shaded stretch of driveway or walkway, the gutter faces above the growth.
